About Us
Welcome to Greek Stray ResQ & Support
We are a compassionate group of volunteers spanning Greece, the UK, and EU countries. Our unwavering commitment lies in aiding the abandoned stray dogs and cats of Greece. Witnessing their plight — the disease, appalling injuries, and malnutrition — weighs heavily on our hearts.
As a small UK registered charity (No. 1207028), we operate as a non-profit organisation with a clear purpose: to forge a future where stray cats and dogs in Greece no longer suffer due to human actions. We believe in compassion as the driving force for change.
Greek Stray ResQ stands independent, receiving no assistance or funding from the Greek government. Our critical work is sustained solely through the generosity of voluntary contributions. We stand alone, but we need your assistance!
We dream of a world where kindness prevails, and future generations fiercely safeguard these precious lives. Join us on this journey — visit our Adoption page and discover your perfect companion. Together, we can make a difference!
Our story
The decision to help the stray animals of Greece wasn’t really a choice – it was a calling. My conscience simply wouldn’t allow me to turn a blind eye to the images I saw: cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies suffering from starvation, illness, or abuse.
Whether on a trip to the countryside, a mountain, or a beach, the strays were always there. Some, too frightened to approach, would shiver in the shadows, while others would come right up to me, tails wagging, even performing little tricks, hoping for just a scrap of my sandwich.
Over the years, I realized there is no quick fix—no magic wand or phone number to call to get a pregnant dog spayed or to find a safe place for her puppies. The responsibility lies with us.
I chose to act. I may not be able to save them all, but I am determined to try.

Rescuing and Rehoming
Finding Loving Homes
Our primary goal is to find loving forever homes for the strays. We believe that every animal deserves a chance at a happy and secure life. Through our adoption process, we match these animals with caring families who can provide them with the love and care they deserve.
Enhancing Living Conditions
We recognise the challenges faced by strays currently residing in overcrowded shelters across Greece. Our efforts extend beyond adoption — we work tirelessly to improve living conditions for these animals. Whether it’s providing temporary shelter, blankets, or food, we strive to make their lives better.
Guidance and Support
Navigating the Process
If you come across a stray animal on our website, social media platforms, or during your visit to Greece — whether on the streets or in a shelter — and wish to adopt or foster, we’re here to guide you. Our experienced team will explain the entire process, from initial interest to final adoption or fostering. Our aim is to make the journey smoother for you.
Home Checks and Contracts
All adoptions are subject to thorough home checks and an adoption contract. By law, you’ll be responsible for ensuring your new furry friend’s well-being. Our goal is for your adopted pet to become an integral part of your family, living comfortably indoors — not on a roof or balcony!
Fostering a Stray: Equally Important
Fostering a stray animal is an equally significant endeavor as adopting one. While adoption may not be feasible for everyone, fostering allows you to make a positive impact on the lives of Greece’s stray cats and dogs. It’s a rewarding experience that brings fulfillment and purpose. Many of our foster families have discovered perfect companions by opening their homes to these strays. If you’re considering fostering, we can offer you assistance as part of our support service.
International Adoptions
Interested in adopting a dog from Greece and bringing it to the UK or elsewhere? We can assist with arrangements. Typically, we transport dogs overland using reliable transporters. The journey takes approximately 3 days, during which the dogs travel comfortably with scheduled stops. We assist with pet passports, vaccinations, microchips, and, if needed, the journey from a Greek island to the mainland. Puppies must be over 4 months old to travel. Dogs weighing under 8 kg (including the pet carrier) can even travel in the cabin of a plane, and AEGEAN Airlines is a pet-friendly carrier.
Comprehensive Support Beyond Adoption and Fostering
Veterinary Clinics
We collaborate with local veterinary clinics to ensure emergency medical care, sterilisation, vaccinations, and microchipping for stray animals.
Pet Taxi and Transport
We assist with transportation, making sure our furry friends get to where they need to be.
Shelter and Essentials
We provide temporary shelter, blankets, and food for strays roaming the streets and rubbish dumps.
